Comparison of Dialysis Outcomes on Hemodialysis(HD) VS. Peritoneal Dialysis(PD); Muticenter Cohort Study in Korea

Introduction: Many interests have been focused on the evidence comparing the dialysis outcomes of ESRD patients on either HD or PD. Methods: We have conducted the multicenter cohort study in Korea to compare the dialysis outcomes between HD and PD. New ESRD patients undergoing incident dialysis were included at the time of initiation of either HD or PD. We investigated demographic characteristics and laboratory parameters at baseline, 6 months, and 12 months. We also compared the nutritional status by subjective global assessment (SGA) and dialysis adequacy parameters between the two groups. Results: A total of 467 ESRD patients (HD : PD = 364:103) were enrolled in this study. Baseline clinical and biochemical parameters including SGA, BMI, CRP and albumin levels were not signifi cantly different between the two groups. The CRP levels at 6 months in HD group were higher than those in PD group (1.86 ± 2.7 g/dl vs. 0.60 ± 0.55 g/dl, p < 0.05), while hemoglobin, albumin, calcium, phosphorus, and the requirement of erythropoietin were not different between the two groups during the follow-up period. At 6 months and 12 months, SGA and dialysis adequacy were not signifi cantly different between the two groups. The technical and patient-survival rate were not signifi cant different between the two groups. Conclusion: This multi-center cohort study suggest that there were the similar dialysis outcomes either in HD or PD group, except systemic infl ammation at 6 months. Further analyses with long-term follow-up would be conducted to evaluate the dialysis outcome of each modality and determine the strategy for choosing the mode of dialysis in incident ESRD patients. *This research work was supported by the organizing committee of APCN2010.
