Indigenous analysis of self-concept and parent-child relationship.

This study examines the conception of self and its relationship to parent-child relationship in Korea. A total of 1,004 respondents, consisting 302 senior high school students (male=139, female=164), 358 university students (male=199, female=139), and 344 adults (male=155, female=189) completed an open-ended survey developed by Kim (1997). When respondents were with their father, the results indicate distance, comfortable, indebtedness, act like a child, converse, and avoidance. For the responses “when I am with my mother” results are as follows: comfortable, act like a child, filial, converse, have difficulties, and indebtedness. For adults, the responses for “when I am with my child” are as follows: pride, joy, responsibility, and love. Overall, respondents feel comfortable and act like a child when they are with their mother and feel relatively uncomfortable or avoidance when they are with their father. For both parents, respondents feel a sense of indebtedness. For adults, there is strong sense of pride and responsibility when they are with their children. The results confirm the importance of relationship and the maintenance of a strong sense of relational self.
