Numerical Study on the Behavior of Air Layer for the Reduction of Frictional Resistance in a Model Ship

초록

The frictional resistance takes more than 70% of the total resistance for most merchant ships. Many researches to reduce the frictional resistance have been carried out for several decades. Among the active or passive devices for the reduction of the frictional resistance the most effective and realistic device is an air lubrication system. Therefore, sev-eral ships applied the air lubrication system and verified the effect in sea trial. However, there was some differences between the results predicted from model tests and those measured from sea trial. In this study, the numerical analyses were carried out for the model and full-scale. And a new extrapolation method was proposed to improve the estimation of the full-scale resistance a ship using air lubrication system. VOF (volume of fluid) was considered for the numerical models of the air layer. The numerical method was validated through the comparison with the experimental data of a model ship, such as the air layer pattern and resistance, measured in SSMB (Samsung Ship Model Basin).
