Trust of parents, teachers and friends: An indigenous psychological analysis among Korean students.

The purpose of this study is to examine Korean adolescents perception of trust and distrust of their parents, teacher, and friends using the indigenous psychological analysis. A total of 600 high school students, 305 students from preparatory high school and 295 vocational high school students participated in the study. The results indicate that adolescents trust their parents because of parental sacrifice (fathers=31%, mothers=31%) and blood relationship (fathers=22%, mothers=24%). For teachers, they trust teachers because of they are teachers (24%), they show affection and concern for them (22%), they provide advice and they are like parents. In terms of trust in friends, it was the important reason for trusting friends that they are reliable (31%), simply because they are my friends (24.2%) and since they understand me (22%). The reasons for distrusting father are as follows: I cannot respect him (49%) and he does not trust me (36%). The reasons of distrusting their mothers are: She does not trust me (48%) and I do not respect her (32%). In terms of distrust of their teachers, I do not respect them (32%) was the most frequent response, followed by they show favoritism or are discriminating (23%). In terms of distrust in friends, over the half of the respondents indicated betrayal (52%) as the most important reason, followed by I cannot know his or her true intention (19%). The implications of the results for the existing theories of trust will be discussed.
