Development of vocabulary and picture symbols for Korean young adults with developmental disabilities

The purpose of this study is to select the vocabulary necessary for meaningful activities of Korean young adults with developmental disabilities and to develop graphic symbols that can represent vocabulary. From the ecological point of view, the core vocabulary was selected in consideration of the living space of adulthood and the picture symbol corresponding to the vocabulary was developed. The period was from May to October 2019, and the validity of the vocabulary was verified through vocabulary validity and iconicity. A total of 200 picture symbols were developed. In order to develop the vocabulary, the areas of human rights, rules, safety, and community were selected through a focus group interview with parents. Based on the results of this interview, each area for the vocabulary was searched and determined. In addition, consistent guidelines were set for the development of the picture symbols. For example, a method of expressing the intensity, direction, and degree of expression centered on Korean young adult males and females was determined accordingly. This developmental research is meaningful in that the symbols were developed focusing on the necessary vocabulary for Korean young adults with developmental disabilities.
